Streator Quarter Auction celebrates 10 years of supporting community organizations

The Streator Quarter Auction is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year.

The quarter auction is a fundraiser that benefits various local organizations and has raised thousands of dollars over the years for causes primarily focused on children in Streator.

Originally started by Sadie Kirk, the torch was passed on to Tonya Olson and now is under the leadership of Mary Timm.

Each month, a different organization is chosen to be the beneficiary of the auction with all proceeds going to support their programs.

The fundraiser typically features 25 local vendors, who offer various goods and services for sale. Participants bid on items with the money raised being donated directly to the cause of the month.

According to Timm, January’s event raised nearly $1,500 for Logan’s Oasis Organization and the upcoming playground at Marilla Park in Streator.

Timm said she hopes to double that amount in February through increased advertising and community outreach.

“We want to get as many people involved as possible and make sure the word gets out,” Timm said. “The more people we can reach, the more funds we can raise to help these kids and local organizations.”

For February, the funds raised will go toward supporting Streator Youth Baseball.

Timm said the proceeds will be used for various needs, including field upgrades, new equipment and even scholarships for children who may otherwise be unable to afford to participate. Streator Youth Baseball President Beau Boyles will provide more details about how the funds will be allocated during the auction.

The event is held on the third Thursday of each month, with Timm personally counting the funds and presenting a check to the recipient organization the following day.

The upcoming auction will be at 6 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 20, at the Knights of Columbus, 806 Oakley Ave. in Streator.
