Employee of Normal children's museum charged with child porn

NORMAL, Ill. (AP) -- A 51-year-old man who worked as a store manager at the Children's Discovery Museum agreed to resign after being charged with taking nude pictures of young boys, officials said.

Jeffrey Shoemaker of Gridley, who was charged last week with child pornography, had worked at the museum store since last July, The (Bloomington) Pantagraph reported on its Web site Tuesday.

Wal-Mart employees had called Normal Police after developing a roll of film that depicted nude boys and Shoemaker was arrested when he picked up the film Friday, according to court documents. It was unclear where the pictures had been taken.

Normal Town Manager Mark Peterson said in a statement Tuesday that the town conducts criminal background checks for all Children's Discovery Museum employees.

"We are confident that the family-friendly atmosphere of the Children's Discovery Museum has never been compromised and the town remains committed to providing exceptional service in a safe, positive environment," Peterson said.

Peterson said Shoemaker agreed to resign Monday.

A message seeking comment was left Tuesday night at a telephone listing for a Jeff Shoemaker in Gridley.
