Kankakee police arrested 24-year-old Nazhai S. Hill, of Kankakee, for allegedly setting a fire that damaged a residence, garage, and three vehicles Tuesday.
At approximately 8:12 a.m., officers were dispatched to a residence in the 800 block of North Greenwood Avenue.
According to a press release, police said there was no one at the location and the building appeared to be vacant.
An investigation determined the 35-year-old male victim and Hill had been involved in a relationship.
Police said they learned Hill had come to the North Greenwood Avenue address to confront the victim.
Hill forced entry into the residence when the victim did not answer the door.
Hill found the victim with another woman, and a physical altercation occurred.
Police said Hill caused considerable damage, including breaking windows. She also doused the victim with lighter fluid and attempted to set him on fire.
The victim was able to flee the residence and sought safety at a nearby relative’s residence.
At 11:01 a.m., police and the Kankakee Fire Department were dispatched to the North Greenwood Avenue residence for a structure fire.
Upon arrival, firefighters found a two-and-a-half car detached garage on fire. The fire was quickly extinguished. There were no injuries reported.
Heat from the fire damaged a nearby home.
Police said two vehicles in the garage were damaged.
Damage to structures was estimated at $40,000, with loss of vehicles estimated at $30,000, fire officials said.
The victim returned to the scene and spoke to investigators. He told them about the earlier incident.
Residents on the scene stated that the fire was the result of arson, according to fire officials.
Hill was found by an arson investigator and taken in for questioning by police.
According to Kankakee County Sheriff’s Office online records, Hill was arrested for the charges of attempted murder, residential arson, home invasion, and aggravated domestic battery.
