Officials believe a lightning strike Thursday morning could be responsible for a fire in a residential section of Sycamore that impacted power in the area.
Interim Sycamore Fire Chief Mike Thomas said that no one was injured in a fire he suspects was started by a lightning strike at about 9:45 a.m. on Thursday in the 100 block of West Lincoln Street.
“This call resulted in a wire down due to a possible lightning strike to a utility pole,” Thomas wrote in an email.
Severe weather impacted the area and was expected to continue in Thursday evening. Much of the region, including DeKalb County is under a tornado watch until 8 p.m., according to the National Weather Service. Spotty showers and thunderstorms fell in the area early Thursday.
Pictures of smoke and fire near downed wires circulated on social media Thursday morning.
Thomas – who was asked to come out of retirement after former fire chief Bart Gilmore was placed on paid administrative leave on Feb. 25 – wrote that the fire impacted a Sycamore home.
“As a result [of the suspected lightning strike], a meter base (attached to a home) was affected including a small fire which was extinguished using a fire extinguisher by one of the firefighters,” Thomas wrote.
ComEd responded to the scene and helped return power to their customers who were impacted by the downed wire, Thomas wrote.
