The Illinois Department of Public Health reported 6,762 new confirmed and probable cases of COVID-19 and 135 additional deaths Wednesday.
The seven-day rolling average of Illinois’ positivity rate increased slightly from 7.4% to 7.5%. The state received the results of 82,328 COVID-19 tests in the 24 hours leading up to Wednesday afternoon.
Illinois has seen 918,070 total cases of the virus, and 15,547 people have died. The state has conducted a total of 12,688,071 tests since the start of the pandemic.
In a Wednesday afternoon news conference, Gov. JB Pritzker said Illinois has now given out a total of 100,991 vaccine doses across the state, the most of any other state in the country.
Shipments of the Moderna vaccine, which was approved by the FDA on Friday, will begin arriving in Illinois this week, Pritzker said. Once distributed, these new shipments will enable doses of the COVID-19 vaccine to reach all 102 counties in the state, he said.
Also on Wednesday, Pritzker said that, despite the fact that three regions (Regions 1, 7 and 6) are meeting the state’s requirements to move back to Tier 2 mitigation measures, which are less restrictive, the state will likely remain in Tier 3 through the new year.
“What we don’t want to do is swing back and forth between mitigations and not having mitigations within days or a week or two of one another,” he said. “My concern is that we might see – we are going likely to see – some uptick from Christmas and from New Year’s in hospitalizations as well as cases.”
As of late Tuesday, Illinois had 4,593 COVID-19 patients in the hospital. Of those, 953 were in intensive care units, and 536 were on ventilators.
