For 2nd time this season, Matt Nagy denies report that he has been informed of his imminent firing

For the second time this season, Bears coach Matt Nagy had to deny that he has been informed of his imminent firing.

Nagy said Wednesday that Bears management hasn’t indicated to him that Sunday’s game against the Minnesota Vikings will be his final game as Bears head coach.

CBS analyst and former NFL QB Boomer Esiason reported on a New York radio show that Nagy has been informed of his imminent firing. Nagy flat out denied that Wednesday.

“I’m very honest and open with [the media], and that has not been told to me,” Nagy said. “There’s going to be reports that come out probably at this time of the season. So anything that is said or reported by anybody is just that. I haven’t been told anything.

“I’m a pretty good source to ask. So I think you’re doing a good job asking me. I would say that anybody that has a report that is going to talk to somebody who talked to somebody who talked to somebody, it’s probably best just to call me up and ask me. I promise you I’ll tell you the truth. You know what I mean? I’m a pretty good source.”

Nagy went through this before in November after a now erroneous Patch report indicated he would be fired after the Thanksgiving Day game against the Lions. Obviously, Nagy didn’t lose his job then.

Nagy said he understands that addressing such speculation is part of the job of an NFL coach. The Bears organization never put out any statement after the first rumors in November, and it hasn’t this week, either. General manager Ryan Pace hasn’t spoken with the media since before the season, and team chairman George McCaskey hasn’t answered any questions since January 2021.

Until McCaskey weighs in on the matter, everything is conjecture.

Nagy said he expects he will speak with his bosses sometime after Sunday’s season finale at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minnesota. Typically the team does exit interviews with players on the Monday after the season finale.

“Whenever the season ends, every year, we meet with the players as a team, and then we always get together – Ryan [Pace], myself and management – and we always discuss where we’re at,” Nagy said. “I suppose that would be the plan, yes.”

Nagy went on to say he hasn’t given any thought to whether this will be his last game. This is not yet the time for sentimentality. He’s focused on preparing for the Vikings.
