Chicago man charged in hit-and-run that killed Dixon native

DIXON – A 49-year-old Chicago man is facing criminal felony charges in connection with the death of a 31-year-old Dixon native.

Michael J. Gin is charged with one count of failure to report an accident that resulted in death, after he allegedly struck Ryan R. Apple with his vehicle on the Eisenhower Expressway and left the scene, according to Illinois State Police.

Apple, a 2007 graduate from Dixon High School and a notable athlete known locally for his performance on the Dixon Dukes basketball and baseball teams, died from injuries sustained from the collision with the vehicle.

Troopers responded around 5:55 a.m. on Sunday to a report of pedestrian-vehicle collision, finding Apple injured on I-290 near Pulaski Road, state police said in a news release.

Gin was reportedly driving a 2009 silver-colored Honda that struck Apple as he walked in the eastbound traffic lanes.

Gin fled the scene without reporting the accident, and Apple died on site, police said.

Cook County prosecutors charged Gin with the single count Tuesday. He appeared in bond court Tuesday and was released on his own recognizance the same day.

His next court date is Dec. 28.

If convicted, Gin could receive a sentence of four to 15 years in prison.
