Area roundup: Marquette's Lucas Hoffman wins St. Bede 1A boys cross country title

Seneca, Fieldcrest Knights advance teams to sectional

PERU — Marquette senior Lucas Hoffman captured his second-straight Class 1A cross country regional title at St. Bede on Saturday after posting a time of 16 minutes, 33 seconds and will make a fourth-consecutive sectional appearance. The Seneca Lady Irish duo of Ashley Alsvig [20:28] and Amber Vroman [21:13] placed second and third, respectively, in the girls event.

The Seneca boys and girls teams both finished second to advance, as did the boys from Fieldcrest after placing fifth.

Following Hoffman in the top 20 were Fieldcrest's Mason Stoeger [6th, 17:11] and Christian Skaggs [10th, 17:41]; Seneca's Austin Aldridge [7th, 17:15] and Calvin Maierhofer [18th, 18:22]. Earlville's Diego Vazquez [18:38] placed 22nd, and Newark's Logan Benesh [19:05] 43rd.

In the girls race, Seneca's Audrey Jenkins [12th, 21:38], Marie Cheshareck [19th, 22:27] and Gracie Steffes [20th, 22:31] finished in the top 20, while Marquette's Lilly Craig [18th, 22:24] advanced as an individual. Fieldcrest's top finisher was Claire Phillips [32nd, 23:49], while Newark's was Gwyneth O'Connell [35th, 24:03].

Sandwich sends 4 from Kaneland

At the Kaneland 2A Regional, the Sandwich's teams each placed sixth but advanced two boys and girls to sectionals.

Steve Aguilar [12th, 16:28] and Wyatt Miller [29th, 16:57] both advanced to next Saturday at Lake Villa Lakes, while Claire Roberts [13th, 20:34] and Alana Stahl [14th, 20:38] will move on in the girls event.
