Huntley girls swimming coach Jenna Gaudio declared prior to the start of the 2019 season, "big things await our team," a year after the Red Raiders finished fifth out of seven teams in the Fox Valley Conference.
Gaudio's preseason prediction was spot on, as the Raiders won the FVC championship for the first time in program history, while snapping Jacobs co-op's two-year reign atop the conference.
Huntley brings back one of three swimmers who earned Most Valuable Swimmer recognition at last year's FVC Invitational, Ella Young, who is joined by a talented group of swimmers that will make the Raiders difficult to beat.
Jacobs co-op returns 2019 Northwest Herald Girls Swimmer of the Year, Jenny Tokarz, a three-time state qualifier, and Cary-Grove's Emily Marks is one of the area's top returning sprinters. Dundee-Crown's Ali Fitzgerald was named FVC Newcomer of the Year as a freshman at last year's conference meet.
The 2020 season will look a lot different because of the COVID-19 pandemic, with no relays and the status of the state meet unknown. FVC teams will compete against only each other, with two duals scheduled per team a week.
Richmond-Burton's Eleni Gewalt, who had the area's best finish at state last year, taking fifth in the 100-yard breaststroke, is holding out hope for a potential state series. R-B does not have a girls swim team, which could put her junior season in jeopardy.
Gewalt, who trains and swims with the Pleasant Prairie Patriots team in Kenosha, Wisconsin, earned National Interscholastic Swimming Coaches Association All-America honors last year with a time of of 1:03.20 at last year's state preliminaries.
