McHenry Police Department advises residents to avoid John Street due to oil spill

The McHenry Police Department issued a Nixle alert late Wednesday evening advising residents to avoid John Street because of a small oil spill accident for the next 24 hours, officer Patrick Polidori said.

The spill near Front and John streets has closed westbound John Street and will require a detour of traffic for the next 24 hours or until advised otherwise, according to the alert. Main Street can be used as an alternate route to access Front Street.

In the meantime, the city will place sand on the road to allow the oil to soak up. The sand will make travel difficult for vehicles and cause delays, Polidori said, so the police department is asking residents to avoid the road.

Polidori said he was not told how the oil spill occurred, but said it was a non-vehicle-related accident.
