Gas prices continue to drop; Illinois nears $2 per gallon average

Gas prices fell below $2 a gallon in McHenry County as prices across the state and country continued to drop as the COVID-19 global pandemic brings daily life to a near standstill with less transportation and travel.

As of Monday morning, the average price for gas in Illinois fell to $2.01 a gallon, according to fuel analysis company GasBuddy, down 2.5 cents from last week and 52.7 cents from last month.

The average national price is even lower at $1.96 a gallon, down 11.2 cents from last week and 46.7 cents from last month. A year ago, the national average was $2.70 and the Illinois average was $2.76.

The cheapest gas in Illinois, according to GasBuddy, was at Costco at 5000 Stadium Drive in Loves Park and Sam’s Club at 7241 Walton St. in Rockford with prices at $1.18 and $1.23 a gallon, respectively.

CITGO at 614 S. Commercial St. in Harrisburg, Murphy USA at 611 Rollie Moore Drive in Harrisburg, and Mach1 at 44 N. Commercial St. and E. Poplar St. in Harrisburg were each at $1.32.

The average price of gas in McHenry County was $1.96 as of 11 a.m. Monday. Among neighboring counties, the average price of gas in DuPage County was $2.05, followed by Will ($2.04), Lake ($2.03), Kane ($1.99) and DeKalb ($1.99).

The average price of gas in LaSalle County was $1.94 a gallon and the average price in Kendall was $1.92. In Chicago, drivers paid an average of $2.17 a gallon, which is down 12.3 cents from last week and 61.1 cents from last month.

Gas prices at both Costco at 250 N. Randall Road in Lake in the Hills and Sam’s Club at 5670 Northwest Highway in Crystal Lake were $1.47.

Elsewhere in McHenry County, Mobil at 4407 S. Hi Point Road in McHenry was $1.69, Mobil at 1901 N. Richmond Road in McHenry was $1.81, and Mariano’s at 105 Northwest Highway in Crystal Lake was $1.82.

The lowest gas in DuPage county was $1.61 per gallon at 600 W. Irving Park Road in Bensenville. Elsewhere, Shell at 4 W. Irving Park Road in Bensenville was $1.63, and CITGO at 217 E. Irving Park Road in Wood Dale was $1.65.

In Lake County, Sam’s Club at 335 N. Milwaukee Ave. in Vernon Hills, Costco at 25901 Riverwoods Road in Mettawa and Woodman’s at 1550 Deerfield Pkwy. in Buffalo Grove were $1.39 per gallon.

In Kane County, Woodman’s at 2190 Randall Road in Carpentersville was $1.47 a gallon, Woodman’s at 2167 Randall Road in Carpentersville was $1.49 and Woodman’s at 151 Hansen Blvd. in North Aurora was $1.65. Costco at 221 S. Randall Road in St. Charles was $1.75 and BP at 1190 N. McLean Blvd. in Elgin was $1.76.

In DeKalb County, Marathon at 411 Main St. in Kirkland was $1.64 a gallon, Casey’s at 129 E. Railroad St. in Kingston was $1.69, and Marathon at 125 N. Annie Glidden Road in DeKalb and Casey’s at 1001 N. Annie Glidden Road were $1.86.
