Yorkville High School Principal David Travis is asking for continued support and cooperation from parents and guardians to help put an end to a series of recent fights at the school.

In an email sent to YHS parents and guardians Thursday, Nov. 21 obtained by the Record Newspapers, Travis acknowledged "several student discipline issues" that have taken place on school grounds in recent weeks.

Travis also confirmed that another physical altercation took place between two students on school grounds earlier that day.

The Nov. 21 fight follows two separate altercations, one between two 17-year-old juvenile students, and one involving a 16-year-old juvenile student that occurred on school grounds the previous day, as well as an altercation between two 16-year-old juvenile students that took place Nov. 14.

"While conflicts between teenagers can be commonplace outside of school, it is not typical behavior at Yorkville High School," Travis wrote in his email.

Travis continued by confirming that Yorkville School District 115 administrators have been working closely with the Yorkville Police Department to spread awareness of the ramifications of fighting on school grounds, as well as communicating with local media in regards to the legal charges facing students involved in the altercations along with the consequences of violating district policies.

"We are thankful for the continued support, guidance, and partnership we share with the Yorkville Police Department as we process each incident and seek potential remedies," Travis wrote. "We are also thankful for the vast majority of YHS students and parents who help keep us appraised of any potential issues so we can be proactive in our efforts to ensure a safe learning environment."

Travis concluded by asking parents and guardians for their continued support and cooperation in helping the high school maintain its positive atmosphere.

"All of us are responsible for student safety and defending the reputation of Yorkville High School," Travis wrote.

Those with concerns, especially students, are encouraged to speak directly with a school administrator, dean, counselor or social worker, or to send anonymous information to administrators through the district's "Y Not Say Something" tip line, accessible through the district app or at www.y115.org/tipline.

Yorkville police did not return calls for comment on the Thursday, Nov. 21 altercation in time for publication.
