The village of Romeoville is evaluating the feasibility of expanding its Edward Hospital Athletic and Event Center.

The center is a 76,000-square-foot facility with a turf field, basketball courts, meeting space and party rooms on the village’s east side.

The village is in the preliminary design and cost analysis phase, Village Manager Steve Gulden said. Since the facility opened in 2014, the once-declining area has undergone a revitalization, with added restaurants and businesses in the area, he said.

“The demand has far exceeded our expectations,” Gulden said. “It’s been a great economic driver for that area.”

The center hosts sports tournaments and large corporate and municipal events, such as Romeoville Mayor John Noak’s annual “State of the Village” address and the HERO Helps Summit on the opioid epidemic in Will County. The village said the center already receives about 400,000 visitors annually. Since the facility opened, the Route 53 corridor has also seen a strip mall open, Fat Ricky’s restaurant opening a new building and the addition of a McDonald’s and a Checkers.

Now the village is looking to expand the center, and although the details are yet to be determined, Gulden said there are discussions about possibly adding an indoor pool, a fitness area and more basketball courts, among other options.

“There’s a lot of things we’re looking at,” Gulden said.

He declined to give any specific numbers about the exact size of the expansion or potential cost, but he said the planning of additions would be budget-driven.
