Petition seeks traffic light at 'dangerous' Shorewood area intersection

An online petition to put a traffic control light at the intersection near Shorewood where a woman was killed in a car crash has gathered more than 15,400 signatures.

A Change.org petition started by AJ Thomas requests Acting Illinois Transportation Secretary Omer Osman to install a traffic control light at the intersection of Route 52 and County Line Road.

The petition was in response to a car crash in that area on Monday where 27-year-old Paige Quinn of Minooka was killed and two Joliet teenagers were injured.

“I have witnessed too many accidents at this intersection because there are no traffic control lights. Endless amounts of people are getting hurt or killed because there needs to be a red light at this intersection,” Thomas said in the petition.

Thomas said the intersection is dangerous because Route 52 bends in a way that limits a driver's field of vision when heading west.

The petition seeks to gather 25,000 signatures and has gained 15,427 as of Thursday afternoon.

Police said the crash occurred when the teen driver of a Ford Escape failed to yield to oncoming traffic before entering the intersection from County Line Road. The driver collided with a Jeep that was on Route 52, police said.

The collision caused the Jeep to roll several times, police said. Quinn, a passenger in the Jeep, was ejected from the car, police said.

She was taken to AMITA Health Saint Joseph Medical Center in Joliet, where she later died, police said.

The 43-year-old driver of the Jeep and a 54-year-old passenger were hospitalized for injuries, police said. The teen driver and a 14-year-old passenger in his car were also hospitalized, police said.
