ST. CHARLES – The owners of Del Barrio Mezcaleria, a Mexican sports bar and tequila bar in downtown Geneva, have been given the green light to open a restaurant in the space that formerly housed Game on 3rd sports bar at 11 N. 3rd St. in downtown St. Charles.
St. Charles couple Amy and Luis Miguel Villanueva plan to open Glory City in the space, which also formerly housed The Grandstander and Abby's Breakfast and Lunch. The couple's restaurant at 507 S. Third St. in Geneva, Del Barrio Mezcaleria, is located in the space formerly occupied by The Grandstander before it moved to St. Charles.
At the Sept. 16 St. Charles City Council meeting, the majority of aldermen approved their liquor license application along with a permit to stay open until 1 a.m. The couple envisions Glory City complementing their Geneva restaurant.
"We want to serve authentic American bar food and Mexico City street food with a touch of gourmet," the couple stated in their concept plan. "We want our customers to experience the Mexico City ambiance in downtown St. Charles."
Glory City's menu would include several types of burgers along with tacos, burritos and salads. The restaurant would also offer appetizers like gringas, pork sliders, ceviche and smoked wings.
The restaurant's bar would have 100 different types of whisky and tequilas. At their Sept. 3 meeting, the majority of aldermen on the St. Charles City Council's Government Operations Committee recommended approval of a liquor license for the new restaurant along with a 1 a.m. late night permit.
