Morris among the safest cities in Illinois

Study shows Morris ranks 73rd in state's safest cities

Do you call Morris home? If so, a new study says you're living in one of the state's top 75 safest cities.

The study was published last month by BackgroundChecks.org. The organization publishes an annual report on the safest cities in each state. The Safest Cities report aims to shift the discussion towards commemorating the cities that have been relentless in their pursuit of day-to-day safety for their citizens, according to the report.

While Chicago’s violent crime problem often gets national attention, the city’s suburbs and outlying areas are among the safest and best places to raise a family in the country.

In fact, 14 smaller Illinois cities–the majority of which are found in greater Chicagoland– earned a high score of 0.6 or higher on the Safety Index according to BackgroundChecks.org.

Morris is ranked 73rd in the state, with a safety index number of .26.

The data used in this report is a combination of information found in the FBI’s UCR program, as well as corresponding Census data. All crime rates were analyzed on a per-capita basis, per 1,000 inhabitants.

There were initially 7,430 cities in the data set. After filtering out the cities with populations of less than 10,000, 2,929 cities remained.

The study calculated violent crime rates and property crime rates by dividing the crime numbers by the population to get rates per 1,000.

Also calculated was the ratio of law enforcement workers to per 1,000. These were weighted with -50% for the violent crime rate, -25% for the property crime rate, and +25% for the law enforcement rate.

The resulting metric provided the safety index score. The higher this number more safe the city is.

Illinois's top five safest cities are Warrenville, Deerfield, Elk Grove Village, Burr Ridge, and Wood Dale.
