In today’s fast paced world it is good to know there are still a few Good Samaritans among us.
A few days ago I had the misfortune of having my car break down on Illinois 2 between Grand Detour and Oregon.
My good fortune was that I landed adjacent to Doug Strawser’s rural residence.
After many dozens of cars drove by without so much as a glance, Doug was backing out of his driveway when he observed my plight.
His offer to help turned into several hours of driving me around to arrange a tow truck and a repair shop.
Very few people will expend that much time and energy to help out with an extensive problem that they didn’t create.

Dear Editor,
Another Summer Reading Program has come and gone at the Mt. Morris Public Library.
Our readers not only met our reading challenge of 1,500 books, but they crushed it by reading 1,780 books.
I am so proud of the 87 people who participated! It was worth getting a little wet!
We need to thank our donors who made it possible to have such a wonderful program.
We received funds, gifts certificates and/or give away items from the following: Casey’s, the Community Women’s Club, Exelon, Ted Geisin, KSB Hospital, Phil & Ferol Labash, the Mt. Morris Fire Department, Oregon Super Valu, the Performing Arts Guild, Pinecrest Community, Plum Electric, R.E. Wolber and Sons Excavating, the Rockford Rivets, the Rockford Ice Hogs, Spectrum Preferred Meats, Sterling Bank, Stillman Bank, Sullivan’s Foods, and anonymous donors.
We also want to thank our volunteers who helped with programs and our final party.
They are Jeff Bold, Abigail Wehler, Maja Shoemaker, Julie Mastny, Deb Daliedes, Rachel Oliver, Lori Wolff, Denise Welsh, Diana Stahl, Brett Belleque, Michelle Murphy, and Dennis Cheatwood.
I need to also commend my staff for all of their hard work this summer. Thank you, Mary, Cindy, Rebecca, and Margaret!

Tootsie Roll drive set for Sept. 13 and 14
Dear Editor,
The 50th annual Knights of Columbus Tootsie Roll drive in Oregon and Mt. Morris will be held Sept. 13 and 14.
Last year $5,640 was raised by the members of Oregon Council 1092 with help from their families and friends.
We also had support from five area businesses that helped with the purchase of candy.
The funds that were raised help to support the Knights of Columbus programs in Illinois, such as Special Olympics and home loans.
Local organizations who also received over $1,500 apiece were Village of Progress, Oregon School District Special Education program, and Stouffer Terrace.
I want to thank to people in Oregon and Mt Morris for their generous support again this year.
