ELMHURST – The Elmhurst Fire Department asks residents to remember to change the batteries in their home smoke detectors as they change their clocks for the end of daylight savings time Nov. 4.

The department's tips for residents using and maintaining smoke alarms include installing smoke alarms in each bedroom, outside each sleeping area and on each level of the home; testing smoke alarms at least monthly using the test button and making sure everyone in the home knows the alarm's sound; and replacing batteries of alarms immediately when they run low, according to a city of Elmhurst post on its website.

Smoke detectors have a life span of 10 years and need to be disposed of properly because many are ionized and contain a small amount of radioactive materials that must be kept out of household hazard waste sites, the post stated. Old smoke detectors can be dropped off in Elmhurst for recycling at Elmhurst City Hall, 209 N. York St.; Fire Station 1, 404 N. York St.; and Fire Station 2, 601 S. York St., according to the post.
