JOLIET – Joliet West’s girls volleyball team won three pool matches and their semifinal in straight sets before falling, 25-21, 25-20, to Yorkville in the finals of Joliet Central’s Peg Bryan Memorial Invite. The Tigers beat Kennedy in the semifinals, 25-20, 25-16, after claiming pool play wins over Wilmington, Thornton Fractional South and East Aurora.
West (6-3) was led by all-tournament selection Natalie Stefanski
(11 aces, 25 kills, 21 blocks). Other Tigers leaders were Britney Drysch (68 assists, nine aces), Ashley Shawmeker (16 kills), Felicity Jones
(22 kills, seven blocks) and Emma Baxter (45 digs).
Joliet Catholic second at West Aurora: The Angels (9-3) went 3-0 in pool play and beat Sycamore in the semifinals before falling, 26-24, 25-21, to the host Blackhawks. Leading the way for JCA were Sophie Krzysciak (10 kills,
17 digs), Jillian Gray (15 kills, 21 digs, seven aces), Emily Holbrook (26 kills, 28 digs), Logan Powers (34 assists), Emily Wilson (25 kills, 40 digs, seven aces), Ryan Hinshaw (59 assists) and Bella Ray (19 kills, four block kills).
Reed-Custer 3, Serena 0: Maggie Meyr (five blocks, seven kills) and Maddi Tiangco (10 digs) led the Comets.

Minooka 8, Yorkville 0: Conor Waldroon had three goals and an assist, Blake Brandenburg added a goal and two assists, Frank Thompson assisted on two goals, and Carson Heglund made six saves for the Indians (4-1-1).
Reed-Custer 1, Serena 1: Christian Williams converted a penalty, while Nathan Minuth recorded 16 saves.

Lockport second at Homewood-Flossmoor: The Porters shot a 305 but lost the title to Sandburg on a fifth-card playoff. Medalist Nolan Weis was the medalist and shot a one-under 70. Ben Sluzas also fired a 70 but took second on a tiebreaker while John Weis added an 80.
MEN’S CROSS COUNTRY
St. Francis second at own invite: The fifth-ranked University of St. Francis men’s cross country team finished in second place at the Fighting Saints Twilight Invitational. Chicago took the team title with 22 points, 23 ahead of USF. In his first collegiate race, freshman Omar Paramo was USF’s top finisher. He took fourth by completing the 5K course in 15 minutes, 50.50 seconds. Matt Wilson (fifth), Zachary Hoover (sixth) and Gabe Ceballos (11th) were next-best for USF.
WOMEN’S CROSS COUNTRY
USF runner-up: The No. 14 University of St. Francis women’s cross country team opened up its 2018 campaign as the runner-up at the Fighting Saints Twilight Invitational. Chicago won the team title with 19 points, while USF (76) edged St. Ambrose (77) for third. The Saints’ top four finished all in a row, beginning with Laisha Corona in 12th (19:10.4) while Sabrina Baftiri, Ashlee Knott and Taylor Conroy were close behind.

Lewis splits at Premiere Challenge: The No. 3 Flyers (5-2) beat Colorado Christian, 3-2, after falling, 3-2, to Texas A&M-Commerce in Denver. Leading the way in the win were Abby Becker (47 assists), Colleen Wilhelm (20 kills) and Ronni Katarzynski. In its loss, Lewis relied on Elizabeth Hyland (17 kills), Becker (32 assists) and Katarzynski (22 assists). Lewis also went 1-1 in the event’s opening day.
USF splits in tournament: The Saints beat Rochester, 3-0, and fell to Spring Arbor, 3-0, at the Siena Heights Invite. Leading USF in the win were Taylor Valant (16 kills), Brooklyn Withey
(12 kills), Alexis Engst (42 assists) and Katie Szakacs (25 digs). In the defeat, the Saints were paced by Withey
(11 kills) and Engst (17 assists).
JJC splits at DuPage: The Wolves beat the hosts 3-2 and fell to Bryant & Stratton, 3-1. Cuay Whitener (11 kills,
24 digs), Anna Breausche (eight kills), Isabella Cosentino (25 assists,) and Emma Sweeney (25 digs) led JJC.
