SYCAMORE – A Round Lake Beach man was sentenced to
10 years in prison Thursday for possession more than 200 grams of a psychedelic drug called DMT.

Michael K. Reilly, 23, of the 100 block of Lakeview Avenue, pleaded guilty to unlawful possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver Thursday morning and was credited with 200 days in jail. He had posted $50,000 bail in July 2017, after police said they found the drugs in his apartment April 19, 2016.

Judge Philip Montgomery accepted Reilly’s plea and ruled that beyond the 10-year prison sentence, he’ll also have to serve three years of probation.

Reilly was on electronic home monitoring, a condition of his bond.

He was first arrested April 19, 2016, after police received a call about a gunshot at his apartment in the 800 block of West Hillcrest Drive, DeKalb police Cmdr. Steve Lekkas has said. Police said Reilly accidentally fired an AK-47. A bullet from the rifle went into another man’s apartment, but no one was injured during the incident. When police responded, they found a DMT manufacturing lab inside the apartment.

Dimethyltryptamine is a powerful psychedelic drug found in ayahuasca, an ancient hallucinogenic drink used by tribes of northern South America.

When police found the lab, they initially weren’t sure what drug was being made, but they suspected it was DMT in liquid form. Since there’s no field test for the drug, it was sent to the state crime lab for testing. A state response team also was notified about the drug lab. When the results came back confirming the substance was DMT, a $500,000 warrant was issued Sept. 29, 2016, for Reilly’s arrest, Lekkas said.

Assistant State’s Attorney Alicia Caplan stood in for fellow Assistant State’s Attorney Scott Schwertley on Thursday morning. Reilly was represented by Oakbrook Terrace-based private lawyer Paul De Luca.
