Judge reduces bond for Wonder Lake woman charged in drug overdose death

Judge grants reduction for woman who recently had gastric bypass surgery

A McHenry County judge reduced bond Tuesday for a woman facing drug-induced homicide charges who said she needs advanced medical attention to recover from gastric bypass surgery.

Sara Peters, 32, remained at the McHenry County Jail on Tuesday evening in lieu of a cash bond. Her family now must post $5,000 bail for her release, rather than the previously required $50,000.

McHenry County Judge Sharon Prather granted the bond reduction Tuesday, noting that Peters has no criminal history and requires medical attention beyond what the jail can provide.

Peters’ attorney, Henry Sugden, told the judge last week that Peters takes 13 medications and has frequent doctor appointments for a recent gastric bypass surgery. She also must stick to a strict diet the jail cannot accommodate, Sugden said.

Peters is charged with delivering oxycodone to Deadra D. Block, who later died of an overdose.

She is due in court April 16.
