Crystal Lake T.J. Maxx eyeing move to Crystal Point Shopping Center

City approval would fill all space at the center

CRYSTAL LAKE – City officials teased in recent weeks that the third and final tenant to move into a vacant space at Crystal Point Shopping Center soon would be announced.

It turns out that T.J. Maxx, which already operates a store a mile west at Country Corners Shopping Center, is that tenant.

On Wednesday, the Crystal Lake Planning and Zoning Commission will review the discount department store’s request for approval that would pave the way for the business to open inside part of the former Sports Authority on the east end of the shopping center.

The estimated 23,000-square-foot space at Crystal Point is a slightly smaller store than the one the company currently operates.

“It’s one of those things that’s happened over the years here in Crystal Lake – retailers jump around a lot,” community development director Michelle Rentzsch said of T.J. Maxx’s desire to move. “It just has to do with synergy in a shopping center. Steinhafels came in to Crystal Point, and [T.J. Maxx’s] lease is up [at their current location], and they’re looking for a new place.”

In December, the city approved a Steinhafels furniture superstore to replace and improve the former Kmart at Crystal Point.

In January, city officials gave the green light to Ulta Beauty to open in a portion of the former Sports Authority, which is being split into two spaces to accommodate both Ulta and T.J. Maxx.

The scope of work includes renovating the façade and entryway to the building, which last was modified by Sports Authority in the 1990s.

Other Crystal Point stores include Best Buy, Ross Dress for Less, World Market and Fresh Market.

Other T.J. Maxx stores near Crystal Lake include one in Algonquin and one in McHenry.

The city’s economic development staff now will have to help find a new tenant for the Country Corners space. Rentzsch said she expects that space to be filled quickly.
