DeKALB – When customers step into Studio One Salon and Spa, 1007 N. First St. in DeKalb, they’re typically greeted by owner Jane Seymour Levinsky and a smiling staff of 20 employees.
Those smiles will be at their brightest on Monday when the salon celebrates its 40th anniversary during its annual holiday open house.
“It’s been a crazy journey,” Levinsky said. “Most of this business is self-motivated. If you’re going to be successful, you really have to reach out and expand your knowledge. I feel like we’ve been able to do that.”
Studio One opened in 1977 as The Arrangement on Grove Street behind The Matador Barber Shop. The salon relocated three times, including inside a home, before moving into its current spot in 2004. The first shop behind The Matador featured just a two-booth salon.
The current salon houses 10 styling booths, a private styling booth, a three-seat pedicure lounge, four manicure tables, two aesthetics rooms, a side-by-side massage room and a wet treatment room. Studio One offers professional hair services, massages, facials, body treatments, sugaring, waxing, manicures, pedicures and lash extensions. Spa services were added nearly two decades ago, Levinsky said.
“I think we’re in a perfect spot,” Levinsky said. “Some people tell me you could be on Sycamore Road, but I like being here because we’re still tied to the community, we’re closer to downtown and this is a main street in the county.”
At Studio One Salon and Spa, clients become family, Levinsky said.
“In this industry, we get to meet people from all walks of life,” Levinsky said. “They’re all different and they all have different goals. The bond we build is special and we form lifelong relationships with them.”
Levinsky’s impact, however, hasn’t been limited to her customers. Deb Kohler is Studio One’s longest-standing employee with more than 32 years of service. Kohler started when the salon was located inside a house with three styling booths. She said her journey with Levinsky has been all about loyalty.
“It’s all about the people you meet,” Kohler said. “The best part of the business is the clients. We’ve seen many faces over the years and many keep coming back. That’s a credit to everyone at Studio One.”
While Kohler has been with Levinsky for decades, Amanda Barone, a 2015 graduate of DeKalb High School, will celebrate her one-year anniversary at Studio One in December. Barone always knew she wanted to go to cosmetology school, but didn’t pursue it immediately after high school.
Last year, Barone started working at Studio One as a front desk receptionist, where she witnessed firsthand everything she wanted to do. Barone then enrolled at Debutantes School in DeKalb, where she began classes in August. She credits Studio One for helping her chase her dreams.
“Jane [Levinsky] has been such an amazing mentor,” Barone said. “Whenever she’s doing a difficult haircut or style I don’t know about, she’ll call me over to watch her so that I can familiarize myself. We always come up with different things I can help with around the salon; there isn’t a day here where we aren’t happy.”
Studio One Salon and Spa will host its holiday open house from 5 and 8 p.m. Monday. Levinsky said there will be 40 gift drawings from Studio One staff and its vendors along with refreshments and live music. Customers also can receive 20 percent off products during the annual event.
“Clients share lots of personal things with their hairdressers, because they know it’s safe,” Levinsky said. “Our dedication to the industry and our community will continue to propel us into the future to be included as a significant part of DeKalb’s history.”
