Crystal Lake man facing heroin charges being held on $250K bond

CRYSTAL LAKE – A local man is being held on $250,000 bond after being arrested and charged with possession of about 1.26 ounces of heroin.

Crystal Lake police arrested Ryan N. Whetham, 34, of the 100 block of North Williams Street, Crystal Lake, on Aug. 31 and charged him with possession of more than a half-ounce of heroin, intent to deliver more than a half-ounce of heroin, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of hypodermic syringes and needles, according to McHenry County Circuit Court records.

Police pulled over Whetham for a traffic stop for improper display of registration. They found heroin worth between $1,300 and $1,400 on the street, Crystal Lake Deputy Chief of Administration Derek Hyrkas said.

Whetham could face between six and 30 years in prison if convicted of the most serious charge, intent to deliver more than a half-ounce of heroin.

He is being held at the McHenry County Jail in lieu of $250,000 bond.

Prosecutors want him to disclose the source of the money if he is able to come up with $25,000 to post bail, according to a motion filed Saturday.

“If the security comes from an illegitimate source and is merely a business expense for a dealer in contraband, there is a paucity of moral force compelling a defendant to reappear,” Assistant State’s Attorney Brian Miller wrote in the motion.

Miller also noted in the motion that Whetham had three previous drug convictions, including a 2011 case that landed him a three-year prison sentence.

During the same traffic stop, police also arrested Bruce Giles, 40, of Chicago for obstructing identification, a misdemeanor.

Giles was wanted on a warrant for a parole violation, Hyrkas said.
