Meet the Joliet Area Sports Hall of Fame Class of 2017.
The Hall of Fame committee has announced Cindy and George Kontos, Don Govoni, Irish O’Reilly and Scott Parzych as this year’s class. The five will be inducted the evening of Sept. 9 on the rooftop at the Joliet Area Historical Museum.
Festivities will begin at 6 p.m. Tickets are $40 and include the induction ceremony, food and refreshments. They may be obtained by visiting the museum website and clicking on “2017 Sports Bash Event.”
Following is a brief rundown on the members of the Class of 2017:
Cindy Kontos: A 1975 graduate of Joliet West High School ... Named Joliet’s No. 1 Female Bowler ... Also gained the distinction of being one of the Top 100 Athletes of the Century at Joliet Township High School ... Proprietor of Town & Country Lanes.
George Kontos: A 1972 graduate of Joliet West High School ... Professional bowler who was an American Bowling Congress world champion ... Named the Joliet Area USBCBA King in 1990 ... Boasts 10 perfect 300 games in his long career ... Illinois Bowling Association Hall of Fame inductee in 2002 ... Named as one of the Top 100 Athletes of the Century at Joliet Township High School ... Proprietor of Town & Country Lanes.
Don Govoni: A 1948 graduate of Joliet Township High School … Undefeated state wrestling champion … Two-time NCAA All-American at Northern Colorado, finishing third at 157 pounds in both 1951 and 1952 … Also won three Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference championships, the national AAU title and the All Armed Forces title … Named as one of the Top 100 Athletes of the Century at Joliet Township.
Irish O’Reilly: Served as Lewis’ head baseball coach for 29 seasons with 23 of his teams reaching NAIA or NCAA postseason play … Finished among the top five teams at the NCAA II Championships five times, including third-place showings in 1988, 1990 and 1994 … Finished his career eighth in victories (982) among all coaches in NCAA Division II history … In 38 years of coaching at the college, junior college and high school levels, he compiled a 1,246-916-8 overall record.
Scott Parzych: A 1978 graduate of Lockport High School … Led the 1977-78 Porters basketball team to a perfect 33-0 record and the Class AA state championship … Averaged 22.0 points and 14.0 rebounds that season en route to earning first-team all-state and All-America honors … A fourth-team all-state selection his junior year … Went on to play at North Carolina State, where he started each of his last two years, including a 22-9 senior season … Played in both the Continental Basketball Association and overseas upon his graduation from North Carolina State.
