4-H youth learn and grow at 25th Kendall County Fair

Image 1 of 8

This past week, 4-H and community members celebrated the silver anniversary of the Kendall County Fair in Yorkville. The annual summer county fair is the culmination of the whole 4-H year.

“Our 4-H members work for months in their project areas to learn new things and develop skills, which they then demonstrate through 4-H exhibits and animal shows at the annual Kendall County Fair,” said Kim Eisnaugle, 4-H Youth Development program coordinator. “The 4-H livestock and animal shows and general project conference judging provide 4-H youth with valuable experience and feedback to continue growing and learning into the next year.”

With 100-plus project areas, 4-H youth can explore a variety of arts and sciences, citizenship, leadership, economics, engineering and technology, and much more.

“The 4-H program empowers youth to be the best they can be,” said Ally Rott, 17, of Sheridan. “It teaches all aspects of life, from vocations to animal care to public speaking and leadership skills.”

Rott was named the 2017 4-H Fair Queen on Friday evening. A seven-year member of Millbrook Mighty Ones 4-H Club, she has excelled in numerous project areas, including citizenship, clothing and fashion, food and nutrition, horticulture, poultry, and visual arts.

Her royal counterpart, 4-H Fair King Ethan Heidrich of Oswego, also has experience in multiple 4-H project areas, including computer science, filmmaking and photography, food and nutrition, natural resources, and public presentations. He is a 10-year member of Barn and Beyond 4-H Club.

“4-H has taught me how to be a leader in any situation, which is a skill that I will be able to use in the future, no matter where I end up,” said Heidrich, a student at University of Illinois. “4-H is a program to learn whatever you want to learn. As long as someone has an interest in something, there is some sort of project, workshop or club that can provide a benefit.”

In addition to project work and other activities, 4-H members volunteer for their communities throughout the year. In turn, at the annual fair, scores of adult community members give back to 4-H through sharing their time and expertise at the 4-H events.

“We want to whole-heartedly thank all the Kendall County Fair volunteers, and 4-H superintendents, judges and other volunteers for giving our youth such an important experience each year,” said Eisnaugle. “Thank you also to our 4-H members and families. You all helped make this year’s 25th anniversary special.”

The 2017 Kendall County Fair 4-H animal show results are as follows (listed by award, sponsor, 4-H member name, city of residence, and 4-H club).

Part 2 of the results, featuring general projects displayed in Smith 4-H Hall and the Education Building, will appear next week.
