Driver charged in hit-and-run in St. Charles that killed motorcyclist from Elgin, police say

Elgin man, 27, dies after SUV struck his motorcycle

Morgan C. Mroz

A woman was charged with several felonies in connection with the hit-and-run death of a motorcyclist in St. Charles late Wednesday, April 1, according to police and jail records.

Morgan C. Mroz, 29, was charged with two counts of felony aggravated DUI in a crash causing death; reckless homicide; and possession of a controlled substance, police said in a news release. Mroz was also charged with four additional traffic citations.

About 11 p.m. Wednesday, police and paramedics were called to the intersection of Country Club Road and North Fifth Avenue for a crash involving an SUV and a motorcycle, according to the release.

A witness reported that the SUV driver may have fled the scene.

The motorcycle rider, a 27-year-old Elgin man, later was pronounced dead at Northwestern Medicine Delnor Hospital in Geneva, according to the release.

St. Charles police found the SUV and Mroz, who was the driver. After further investigation, Mroz was arrested and charged, according to the release.

St. Charles police encourage anyone who might have additional information regarding this incident to call 630-377-4435.

The Kane County Accident Reconstruction Team also assisted with the crash investigation, according to the release.

Mroz is currently being held in the Kane County jail with a court appearance scheduled on Friday, April 3. Authorities identified her as a West Chicago resident but jail records give a Campton Township address.

Kane County court records show a person with the same name and age pleaded guilty to driving under the influence in 2019, received 12 months of supervision and alcohol treatment, and in 2018 pleaded guilty to a charge of possession of open alcohol by a passenger, for which a fine was paid, records show.
