I truly appreciate Sauk Valley Media's invitation to write a guest column. Initially I thought I should write about my past and my qualifications for this job – both of which make me very proud. But rather than sing my own praises, I just want to use this space to let voters know why I want to represent Dixon as a councilman.
Having served as a city council member for 4 years, I take a great deal of pride in my hometown, as well as all the folks who choose to call Dixon their home, too.
Despite issues from the past, we have much to be proud of, and we have the integrity and the drive to continue moving this great city forward. I'm happy I am able to help Dixon to continue as a city of which we can all be proud.
My goals for this position are simple. I want to help move Dixon forward. In the face of state budget cuts and other adverse state and national issues, the next councilmen need to be proactive. We will need to work as a team.
Of course, we won't always agree, but that's good, too, since it allows everyone to look at facets of an issue we might otherwise not recognize. I look forward to the challenge if you put your support behind me.
As a councilman, I understand I represent everyone – not just a select few. From children to teenagers to young adults, middle-aged and seniors, I want to be your voice.
I want to listen to you. I want to continue to learn what you think, hear what you say, and be an advocate for all – men and women, old and young, the haves and the have nots.
I want to see more programs for our city's youths. We need to grow our industrial base. I'd love for our city to have an activity center.
Continuing to focus on our downtown growth remains another priority. I could go on and on. Short-term thinking doesn't have a place for us – we have to look at the big picture.
The bottom line is this, though. I want – no, I need – your vote to continue my people-first vision. Without its people, Dixon does not exist. I want to be your voice, when others refuse to listen. I want to represent you.
I would very much appreciate your vote on April 4.
Thank you.
