BATAVIA – With summer fun in the rearview mirror, the season for scares turns Batavia’s swimming hole into a Haunted Quarry for two more Saturdays.
It is the first year the Batavia Park District has expanded the attraction through Halloween weekend, with remaining guided tours set from 7 to 10 p.m. Oct. 22 and 29.
“It’s a fun event – it’s definitely become a tradition,” said Katie Drum, the park district’s marketing and sponsorship coordinator. “It’s not just for younger kids or teenagers. We get groups of adults who make a fun night out of it.”
She said the annual event needs about 30 to 40 volunteers per night, plus 10 to 12 staff members. For youth and adults who want to be part of the behind-the-scenes action, it’s not too late to volunteer.
The Haunted Quarry is brought to life by different departments within the park district that are responsible for creating hair-raising attractions at their own sections of the venue. They will transform areas such as bathhouses and the manager’s office along with the zombie graveyard and nearby mazes.
Drum said staff members are in charge of providing props and decorating.
“We … handmake or collect all of the props for each of our sections, which is why we can keep the cost low,” Drum said. “We get very resourceful with the types of materials we use.”
She’s been building a sea monster from chicken wire, wood, plastic tarping and some donated heating and cooling duct material.
“A lot of blood, sweat and tears goes into [it],” Drum said of the three-weekend event.
Organizers suggest the Haunted Quarry is suitable for ages 11 and older.
“It’s definitely on the scarier side,” Drum said. “We don’t recommend it for younger [kids]. The themes are not appropriate for that age group.”
She said a tour guide will lead each group of about six to eight people through the course.
“It is quite dark down at the quarry; it adds to the spookiness,” Drum said. “We make sure it’s a safe event for everyone, and nobody gets lost.”
There will be hot beverages and refreshments from Bernie’s Bully Dogs, and some of the sponsors will offer added activities.
Haunted Quarry is sponsored by Jersey Mike’s Subs, All Dressed Up Costumes, Chick-fil-A Batavia, Window Works and A Thin Line Tattoo.
