WOODSTOCK – A Twin Lakes, Wisconsin woman was under the influence of heroin when she caused a crash that left a Woodstock mother dead, authorities allege in new criminal charges filed against her.

Sheree Ann Shaw, 45, was driving a 2002 Ford Taurus north in the 2500 block Route 31 in McHenry about 3:30 p.m. Friday, May 6 when she entered the southbound lanes, striking a 2007 Harley-Davidson Road Glide being driven by Mike Thornton with passenger Amy Thornton, McHenry Deputy Chief John Birk said.

Amy Thornton, 42, died Sunday, May 15 at Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville, where she was taken after the crash. Her husband, Mike Thornton, 39, suffered serious injuries and remains in the hospital.

Shaw has been charged with aggravated DUI causing the death of another person, a Class 2 felony; driving under the influence of any amount of drug and driving on a suspended license, both Class A misdemeanors; and improper lane usage, a petty offense, Birk said.

With the assistance of the U.S. Marshall's Task Force, Shaw was taken into custody Thursday in Twin Lakes without incident, police said. She was taken to the Walworth County Jail to await extradition proceedings.

If convicted of the felony charge, Shaw could face up to seven years in prison.

Thornton was a mother of two and a nurse. The day before she died, her oldest son, 18-year-old Zach, graduated from Woodstock North High School. Her younger son, 14-year-old Michael, recently graduated from Northwood Middle School.

“She was very outgoing,” Mike Thornton previously said. “She never had a bad thing to say about anyone. If you met her, you were friends forever.”

A GoFundMe.com account set up to raise money to help the family with living and medical expenses has so far raised more the $15,000.

The family plans to hold a celebration of Amy Thornton's life once her husband has recovered from his injuries.

"On behalf of Chief John Jones and the McHenry Police Department, our sincere condolences go out to the family of Amy Thornton," police said in a news release.
