Shorewood man urges men to get screened for prostate cancer

SHOREWOOD – Steve Bourque's father died of prostate cancer at age 60. Bourque was diagnosed with it at age 50. His son is in his early 30s, and Bourque is concerned for his son's prostate health.

In his book, "Breaking the Cancer Chain: A Man's Guide to Prostate Health," Bourque shares his experiences and exhorts men to take advantage of early screenings.

"It's not a huge book, but it goes right to the point," Bourque said.

Bourque said he will discuss his book and these views at 6:50 a.m. May 1 on ABC Channel 7, as well as during a Men's Health Hour on May 7 at St. Jude Catholic Church in New Lenox. His goal is to talk to men's groups across the United States.

Because like many men, Bourque said he hadn't followed up on his own health. It was his wife who urged him to be screened. While prostate cancer can't be prevented, Bourque feels early detection is key to survival.

"If you're going to get it, you might as well be proactive," Bourque said.

"Breaking the Cancer Chain: A Man's Guide to Prostate Health" is available for purchase at www.tatepublishing.com/bookstore.
