Critic’s Choice: ‘Seussical’ delights kids in Lincolnshire

LINCOLNSHIRE – The late writer, cartoonist and illustrator Theodor Seuss Geisel (1904-1991), better known as Dr. Seuss, left a legacy of children’s books from “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” to “Green Eggs and Ham” that are still immensely popular today. If there’s any doubt, just check out the musical production of “Seussical” that’s filling seats at Marriott Theatre for Young Audiences in Lincolnshire.

The pop musical, created by Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty, and directed and choreographed by Rachel Rockwell, includes musical direction by Ryan T. Nelson.

During this hour-long performance, “Seussical” transports the audience with elements from Dr. Seuss' classics, including “The Cat in the Hat” (featuring George Keating), “Horton Hears a Who” (starring a well-padded Michael Aaron Lindner as Horton the Elephant) and “Yertle the Turtle,” among other stories.

Friendship, bravery, compassion and above all, the power of imagination are celebrated in this lively and enchanting production as Horton and cohorts embark on an adventurous journey from the Jungle of Nool, traveling through mountains and across the ocean to help a young girl named JoJo (Ava Morse and Sage Harper share the role) to restore harmony to the tiny planet.

Others in the cast include Landree Fleming as Gertrude McFuzz; Alexis Rogers as Sour Kangaroo and Stephanie Binetti as Mayzie. They are joined by Eric Lewis, Johanna McKenzie Miller, Samantha Pauly, Brandon Springman and Liam Quealy.

Credit Nancy Missimi for the colorful costumes; Greg Hoffmann, lighting; Bob Gilmartin, set design; Jeff Kmiec, set and props; and Patti Garwood, musical supervision.
