Former Kane County Board attorney Ken Shepro on Monday filed to run against incumbent Chris Lauzen in the Kane County Board chairman Republican primary race.

Shepro, a Wayne-based attorney, said he filed his paperwork Monday afternoon, including 849 signatures on his petition.

“I feel that my own 12-plus years in county government makes me uniquely qualified to be the county board chairman,” Shepro said Monday. “I worked with almost all the elected officials and the county board on legal and substantive issues.”

Shepro in the late 1990s began working for the county on various litigation matters before he became the Kane County Board attorney starting in 2004.

Lauzen, who was an Illinois state senator for 20 years, defeated Geneva Mayor Kevin Burns in the 2012 primary and Sue Klinkhamer in the general election to win his first term as board chairman.

“I’m just delighted,” Lauzen said of having a challenger. “I welcome the competition and comparison.”

In other county races in the March 15 general primary election, John Shoemaker of North Aurora will face Tao Martinez in the Democratic primary for Kane County coroner, according to the Kane County Elections website. Bob Tiballi is running against incumbent Rob Russell in the Republican primary for coroner.

Plainfield resident Jesse Maggitt on Monday filed to run against Jim Walz of Gurnee and John J. Hosta of Spring Grove in the 14th Congressional District Democratic primary, according to the Illinois State Board of Elections.

Incumbent U.S. Rep. Randy Hultgren, R-Plano, is running unopposed in the Republican primary.

Glen Ellyn residents Gerald “Jerry” Drabik and Gordon “Jay” Kinzler will face incumbent U.S. Rep. Peter Roskam, R-Wheaton, in the 6th Congressional District Republican primary. Robert Marshall of Burr Ridge will face Amanda Howland of Lake Zurich in the Democratic primary for the seat.

DuPage County Board member Tonia Khouri, R-Wheaton, along with Republican candidates Nick Stella of Darien and Herman B. White of Naperville, are vying for the seat of incumbent U.S. Rep. Bill Foster, D-Naperville.

Foster is running unopposed in the Democratic primary.

Also, incumbent State Sen. Jim Oberweis, R-Sugar Grove will not face competition in the Republican primary, according to the Illinois State Board of Elections. St. Charles School District 303 board member Corinne Pierog also is unopposed in the Democratic primary for Oberweis’ seat.

A lottery for simultaneous petitions, which were filed for the March 15 general primary on 8:30 a.m. Nov. 23, will be at 9:30 a.m. Dec. 9 at the Kane County Clerk’s Office (Building B), Kane County Government Center, 719 S. Batavia Ave., Geneva.
