The 100-yard butterfly is an event to watch in this weekend’s Girls State Swimming & Diving Meet at New Trier.
Plainfield Central co-op senior Carly Kramer, a Plainfield North student who has signed to swim at Arizona State, is the No 1 seed with a sectional time of 56.05 seconds. Close behind in the No. 2 spot is Lincoln-Way East sophomore Makayla Varga, whose sectional time was 56.42.
Also in the top 10 seeds from the Joliet area are Lockport senior diver Carolyn Dietz, who is fourth with 517.15 points, and Plainfield Central’s 200 medley relay team, which is ninth with a 1:46.36. Fenwick is first in the medley relay at 1:44.28.
CLASS 5A FOOTBALL
Lincoln-Way West game at 2 p.m.: The Class 5A state semifinal football game, with Lincoln-Way West facing Champaign Central at the Champaign Centennial field, is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. Saturday. Centennial High School is at 913 S. Crescent Drive in Champaign.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Mahomet-Seymour 48, Morris 37: Mya Shannon led Morris (0-1) in the Prairie Central Tournament game with 12 points. Meghan Jurak scored eight, Meghan Smith seven and Jessica Jurak five.
Gardner-South Wilmington 43, Manteno 26: Jenni Price had 12 points and three blocks, Celia Barna 10 points and eight rebounds and Marlana Ferrari eight points and 11 rebounds for Gardner (1-0).
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Lewis’ Johnson cited: Lewis senior guard Jamie Johnson has been named the Great Lakes Valley Conference Player of the Week in women’s basketball, the conference announced Monday.
Johnson averaged 22 points and 4.5 assists, including a 9 assists/turnover ratio, to lead the No. 2 Flyers to two wins during the opening weekend. Lewis topped regional foe Saginaw Valley State on Saturday, 65-56, before beating another in-region opponent in Northwood, 78-57, Sunday.
COLLEGE FOOTBALL
USF’s Butkus honored: St. Francis sophomore quarterback Don Butkus has been named Mid-States Football Association Midwest League Offensive Player of the Week.
Butkus figured in five of the Saints’ six touchdowns, throwing for three and running for two, as USF defeated Olivet Nazarene, 40-0, Saturday to gain a share of the MSFA Midwest League title. He completed 17 of 30 passes for 221 yards and three touchdowns while rushing for 70 yards on 10 carries.
The Saints finished 4-1 in MSFA Midwest League play to tie Saint Xavier University for the conference crown. USF was ranked No. 18 in the final NAIA coaches’ poll.
