GLEN ELLYN – A pub plans to open in November in the former Asian Pearl restaurant at 466 N. Main St. in downtown Glen Ellyn.
Brothers Brian and Kevin Hahn, who own Jackson Avenue Pub in Naperville, recently took over the lease from Asian Pearl to open their second restaurant, Main Street Pub, Glen Ellyn Economic Development Coordinator Meredith Hannah told village trustees in a memo.
"Their main focus is creating a unique menu featuring creative, gourmet burgers and pairing them with local and interesting craft beers," Hannah said in the memo.
The Glen Ellyn Village Board on Oct. 12 approved a $13,750 facade improvement grant for Main Street Pub, along with a $15,000 downtown retail interior improvement grant. Main Street Pub plans to add new men's and women's restrooms to the space, Hannah said. Previously, restrooms for the restaurant were shared with the adjoining building at 460 N. Main St., including M & Em's Boutique and Sunshine Dance Studio.
In addition, the Hahns plan to replace the building's exterior windows with windows that open to the street to enhance the downtown's open air dining experience, Hannah said.
The facade improvement project is expected to cost $29,990, while the interior improvement project, including new bathrooms, is expected to cost $31,925, Hannah said.
Village Trustee Tim Elliott, who was the only trustee to vote against awarding the grants, voiced concerns about the effect the grants would have on the village's budget.
"It is important that we live within the parameters we set for ourselves," Elliott said.
Only $1,250 is currently available for grants this fiscal year after village trustees already approved several grants, Hannah said.
"It may be necessary for the Village Board to approve a budget amendment to accommodate this award request, however, since the payouts take place over the course of a 12-month period from approval, this may not be necessary," Hannah told trustees.
