Woodstock's Hope Through Dance to raise money for suicide awareness

WOODSTOCK – Hope Through Dance will hold its sixth performance in Woodstock Saturday to raise money for suicide awareness through the Laura Twirls Foundation.

The event and foundation were started in honor of Laura Maceika, who committed suicide when she was 21-years-old in 2009, Jeri Pulver, Wonder Lake resident and Maceika's mother said.

Pulver said she founded the Laura Twirls Foundation to educate society about suicide and viewing it as a mental health issue.

"People need to be aware," Pulver said. "It can happen anytime, anywhere to anyone."

Since it started in 2009, the Laura Twirls Foundation has raised about $10,000, Pulver said. Money goes to the McHenry County Crisis Program, Pulver said.

Shannon Levitt has been working with Hope Through Dance since it started, she said, and choreographed a dance piece for the first Hope Through Dance show for Maceika's former students.

"Laura was a brilliant artist,” Levitt said of Maceika, who had danced since she was 7-years-old.

Twelve groups are dancing at the show, held at 8 p.m. Saturday at the Woodstock Opera House.

"It's a different type of performance because we are giving back, and we are doing this in honor and memory of our friend Laura," Levitt said. "So with that charity part of it, it just gives such a different feel to the show."

Tickets are being sold for $28 for adults and $18 for students through the Woodstock Opera House.
