Q&A with Molly Waasdorp, Sauk student trustee

DIXON – Molly Waasdorp is the student trustee on the Sauk Valley Community College Board of Trustees. She has been on the board since April.

How did you get on the board?

The position I ran for made me the representative on the board. The students vote for the candidates like a real election. We have elections once a year in April. I thought it would be a neat opportunity, so I decided to run. I thought I could make a difference.

How long is your term?

My position is a year. My term runs from April to April.

What made you get on the board?

I really wanted to become more involved on campus. My first year, I was a ghost student. I came for my classes, and that was it. By my second year, I met more people, and I went to more events, and I wanted to be a part of the college. I also wanted to represent the students.

Do you have a vote?

I have an advisory vote. I get to vote on every motion we carry. But, my vote will not break a tie. They do listen to what I say. It’s a huge responsibility.

What are your plans after Sauk?

I plan on graduating in the spring with an associate degree. I’d like to transfer to University of Illinois-Chicago, where I will finish up my degree in business communications. I’d like to minor in law while I’m there.

What do you want to become?

I really want to work with people. I want to work for a corporation. I might go into human resources. I’d really like to work in customer service and with the population.

Where do work now?

Timber Creek in Dixon

Where did you go to high school?

I was home-schooled all the way through high school. I had a counselor, and we’d meet twice a year. It was a regular curriculum, very similar to what you learn in high school.
