Crystal Lake man charged with drug offenses after false medical alert, police say

CRYSTAL LAKE – An unintentional medical alert led police to a Crystal Lake home where they found, not a resident in distress, but rather 300 grams of marijuana, along with two marijuana plants, police said.

A resident of the home, Jonathan B. Ernst, 35, has been charged with several drug-related offenses: unlawful possession of marijuana with intent to deliver, a Class 3 felony; unlawful possession of marijuana, a Class 4 felony; unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia, a Class A misdemeanor; unlawful possession of a hypodermic syringe or needle, a Class A misdemeanor; and unlawful production of marijuana sativa plants, a Crystal Lake Police Department news release said.

Officers responded about 2 p.m. Tuesday to 171 W. Crystal Lake Ave. after receiving a report of a medical emergency in the home, but when they arrived, nobody came to the door, Cmdr. Dan Dziewior said.

“Given the nature of the call, officers made entry into the home,” Dziewior said. “They didn’t find anyone with a medical problem, but instead, ended up finding Mr. Ernst.”

Two potted marijuana plants, about 4 feet in height, were visible to officers when they entered the residence, Dziewior said. He added further investigation discovered drug paraphernalia and more than 300 grams of marijuana.

Dziewior explained the medical alert apparently was activated unintentionally by another family member who lives in the home but was not there at the time.

Ernst was later confined at the McHenry County Jail, where he remained as of Wednesday afternoon in lieu of a $35,000 bond.
