List: Eight can't-miss events this summer in Lemont

LEMONT – School is almost out and the weather is starting to feel seasonable.

When making plans for summer fun, don't forget some of the special events taking place in Lemont.

Besides being close, most of these events have the advantage of being free.

1. Lemont Classic Car Club Cruise Nights

When: 5 to 8 p.m. Saturdays, starting May 24; 6 to 9 p.m. Mondays, ongoing and through the summer

Where: Saturdays at Christ Community Church, 13400 Bell Road; Mondays at Lemont Tree Restaurant, 1035 State St.

Details: The club will have special events during the summer, so check the website to stay updated. They also like to travel to other car shows in the area.

2. Lemont Legends Cruise Nights

When: 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesdays, June 4 to Aug. 27

Where: Downtown Lemont

Details: Each week has a different theme, with three trophies awarded to cars fitting that theme. There will also be a DJ, food court and raffles.

3. Sunset Soire Concerts

When: 6 p.m. Thursdays, June 5 and 19, July 24 and Aug. 7 and 21

Where: Downtown Lemont

Details: The Lemont Park District is teaming up with the Village of Lemont for the free concerts this year, meaning a new location. The acts include Just South of Heaven, The Walk-Ins, Split Decision, Rendition and The Janglers. The Aug. 21 concert, a "Back to School Bash," will be at Covington Park, 1257 Covington Drive.

4. For the Love of Dogs

When: 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Sunday, June 8

Where: Central Bark Dog Park, northwest corner of Timberline Drive and 127th Street

Details: Bring your dog for a walk, costume contest, trick contest, 50/50 raffle and pet product vendors. Funds raised will assist veterinary costs for pantry household pets.

5. Freedom Days

When: Sunday, June 29 to Thursday, July 3

Where: Lemont Park District Centennial Campus, 16028 127th St.

Details: The Lemont Park District has expanded its Freedom 5K into a multi-day festival. The race will be at 8 a.m. June 29, followed by a pool party from 5 to 8 p.m. June 30, a kite flying event from 6 to 8 p.m. July 1, a zumba class to benefit the Lemont VFW at 6:30 p.m. July 2 at Legion Park and an Independence Day Extravaganza starting at 4 p.m. July 3.

6. Heritage Fest

When: 4 to 11 p.m. Saturday, July 12

Where: Downtown Lemont

Details: The free annual festival includes music, food and games. New attractions this year are the Spider Climb and the Meltdown.

7. Giving Back to Lemont Concert Benefit

When: 4 to 9 p.m. Saturday, July 26

Where: Front Street Cantina, 319 Front St.

Details: Local talent will play for this event, which benefits the Lemont food pantries. Patrons are asked to bring a nonperishable food donation or to make a monetary donation.

8. Kops-N-Kidz Day

When: 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 2

Where: Centennial Park, 16028 127th St.

Details: The event held by the Lemont Police Department starts with a bike parade at Lion's Park, Roberta Street and Timberline Drive. The main event will include demonstrations and kids activities.
