ST. CHARLES – Two South Elgin nursing aides face additional charges in connection to a reported elder abuse case at their former St. Charles employer, according to court documents.
Jacqueline Santos and Chemyra Barnett, both 18, were indicted April 16. The indictment contains two new counts for Santos and Barnett – abuse of a long-term care facility resident, a class 3 felony, and dissemination of an unauthorized video recording.
The two other counts in their indictment are aggravated battery, a class 3 felony, and unauthorized video recording, a class 4 felony. The counts supercede the initial battery and unauthorized recording charges Santos and Barnett received in March.
Barnett appeared in court on Thursday with her attorney Richard C. Irvin before Judge Susan Clancy Boles. A motion to change Barnett's curfew hours for her May 24 graduation was denied, but a motion to change curfew hours for her May 10 prom was granted, according to court documents.
Barnett must be in her residence by 11:15 p.m. on prom night, according to a Thursday court order.
Irvin on Thursday filed a standard motion for discovery for police statements, evidence, a witness list and more in connection to the charges. Santos’ attorney Timothy P. Martin filed a standard motion for discovery during March 27, her last court appearance.
Santos and Barnett are accused of hitting a 97-year-old woman in the face with a nylon strap and making a video recording of the incident, according to court documents. Police said the incident occurred March 11 at the Rosewood Care Center in St. Charles, where Santos and Barnett worked as certified nursing aides. They were terminated after the incident.
Santos is next scheduled to appear in court May 8, according to court records. Barnett's next court date is May 28.
