Nothing clean cut, tight or slicked back is what stylists at My Friend’s Salon in Grayslake are hearing from their clients when getting updos for homecoming, said salon owner Jamie Janusz. She spoke with Lake County Journal reporter Yadira Sanchez Olson about what’s trendy.
What’s the trend this season for homecoming dance updos?
A lot of to the side hair. The trend with the dresses must be one shoulder because we’re doing a lot of curls to the side or a French braid to the side that curves around the bottom, or tight curls pinned over the side braid. The style seems more loose and romantic than tight hair like a few years ago.
What are some prices for updos?
With curls up, it can go up to $45. They start at $25. We try to be very fair with our prices.
Is it a good idea for girls to bring in a picture of what updo they like?
That helps a lot. Ninety percent of the photos we see are from Pinterest and it’s great because you see back views and side views so we really get a good idea of what they want. I think Pinterest has really opened their eyes to what they can do to their hair.
What is the atmosphere like at My Friend’s Salon?
Comfort is key to me. The salon is laid back, cozy, home-like. It’s like your living room, with couches and rugs. Some of our clients come in sometimes just to sit and talk. They bring their dogs in and we give them treats. There’s a play area and a wall of art for the kids.
