WAUCONDA – At a regular meeting June 7, members of the Wauconda Village Board voted unanimously to accept a new official motto for the village.
Wauconda will now be known as the “Village With a View,” a message that has a dual meaning behind it, said Trustee Linda Starkey, who was on the committee that sorted through dozens of suggestions.
“Not only do we have a nice view of [Bangs] Lake and the forest preserves, but also we have a vision, and we’re planning for the future,” Starkey said.
The motto is concise and easy to remember, Starkey added, but is still a comprehensive representation of the village.
Since the beginning of the year, residents had poured in upwards of 50 suggestions for a village motto, Starkey said.
The committee – made up of several former board members and nearly a dozen villagers – narrowed them down to three choices.
“Wauconda: Preserving our past, envisioning our future” and “Work, play, live – the unique spirit of Wauconda” also were top picks. But “Village With a View” won out.
The village’s communication committee, headed by Starkey, will be promoting the new motto in coming weeks, she said.
It soon will be on village letterheads and banners, said Mayor Mark Knigge, and could make its way to more prominent Wauconda structures.
“I would imagine, eventually, when we ever get the money to repaint the water tower, [the motto] would go on it,” Knigge said.
It also could be posted on entrance signs to the community, Starkey said.
