STERLING – Henry Floyd Smoot, 94, of Sterling, died Saturday, June 26, 2010, at Walnut Manor.

Floyd was born March 4, 1916, in Cobden, the son of William and Leona (Grimes) Smoot. He married Golda Virginia Bell on Aug. 13, 1938, in Jackson, Mo. She died Sept. 27, 2002.

He farmed in southern Illinois, in the Anna area for 20 years, moved to Rock Falls, and worked at Northwestern Steel and Wire Co. for 23 years.

He was a member of First Church of the Nazarene, Sterling. Floyd enjoyed gardening and puttering around in the yard. He also liked to work with wood and make clocks.

Survivors include two daughters, Oma (Tony) Mickelson of Rock Falls and Margaret Anita (Thomas) Boken of DeKalb; three sons, Donald (Sylvia) Smoot of Sterling, Vernon (Anna) Smoot of Sterling, and Floyd Deon (Melodie) Smoot of Evansville, Ind.; two sisters, Mary Dunlap of Anna and Aileen Trobaugh of Elgin; one brother, Muriel Trobaugh of Macomb; 15 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; many great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife; his parents; three brothers, Everett Smoot and Harry and Kenneth Trobaugh; one sister, Mabel Nance; and three grandchildren.

Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at McDonald Funeral Home, Rock Falls, with the Rev. Bob Hasselbring of First Church of the Nazarene officiating. Burial will be at Riverside Cemetery, Sterling. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established to First Church of the Nazarene, Sterling.
