Joliet man accused of unlawful gun possession after search warrant operation

A Joliet man was arrested after he was accused of unlawfully possessing a gun found during a search warrant operation on Garnsey Avenue in the city’s east side.

On Thursday, Sebastian Gates, 27, was taken into custody on probable cause of aggravated unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon, possession of a controlled substance and other offenses, according to a statement from Joliet Police Sgt. Dwayne English.

Online court records have not yet shown formal charges against Gates.

About 9 a.m. Thursday, the search warrant operation was conducted by members of the police department’s narcotics unit, tactical unit, special operations squad, crisis negotiation team, K9 unit and neighborhood policing team, according to the statement.

An investigation by the narcotics unit had identified Gates as a “suspect in a narcotics-related case,” English said.

Officers were conducting the execution of a search warrant on Thursday, April 2, 2026, at a residence in the 400 block of Garnsey Avenue in Joliet.

The operation was carried out in the 400 block of Garnsey Avenue. Officers had issued a shelter-in-place order for residents as a precaution and blocked off the area.

Gates was detained at the scene after officers executed the search warrant at his residence on Garnsey Avenue, English said.

During a search of the residence, officers recovered a handgun, ammunition and suspected MDMA, English said. MDMA is a synthetic drug that is also known as ecstasy.

Gates was taken to the Will County jail, and his next court hearing has been set for Saturday morning, according to the county’s jail log.
