Peru Police Chief Doug Bernabei said during Monday’s City Council meeting the department will be promoting Officer Amy Sines to detective.

Sines is a 17-year veteran of the Peru Police Department, a field training officer, hostage negotiator and will be the first female detective in the department’s history.

Sines also has been a part of the former Illinois Valley Peer Jury Program since 2004, which is now known as the Peru Police Department Youth Diversion Program.

She holds an associates degree from Illinois Valley Community College and a bachelors degree in criminal justice from Illinois State University.

The detective vacancy was created after some rotation within the detective division as Sines will assume the position effective May 1.

Bernabei said the department had many applicants put in for the vacancy but ultimately decided Sines was best able to fulfill the role at this time.

“What was especially rewarding was when they did the interviews they said ‘If we had five openings for detectives, we had five great candidates that applied,’ ” Bernabei said. “She is going to be the new detective and will handle general cases in the detective division.”

Council members shared their approval of Sines for the position and congratulated her on the promotion to detective.
