Girls Basketball: St. Charles East coach Michael Murphy resigns for ‘personal reasons’, D303 confirms

ST. CHARLES – St. Charles East girls varsity basketball coach Michael Murphy has resigned, St. Charles East Athletics Director Michael Sommerfeld told the Chronicle on Tuesday.

Murphy resigned for “personal reasons”, Sommerfeld confirmed.

District 303 Communications Director Carol Smith also confirmed via email Tuesday afternoon Murphy has resigned for personal reasons.

Smith also confirmed Murphy “only served the district in his capacity as a coach.”

The Saints (8-1) have not played since Dec. 17 due to a COVID-19 situation within the program. Their season was initially set to resume with a varsity contest against Geneva on Wednesday, but that game has been postponed for a date to be determined.

Murphy was hired in May 2020 to take over the program after serving multiple years as an assistant coach in the boys varsity program.

Assistant coach Josh Foster will assume primary coaching duties for the remainder of the season alongside Hannah Vitkus, Sommerfeld said.

The school’s IHSA coaches page was updated on Sunday, removing Murphy’s name for girls basketball.

A text to Murphy for comment was not immediately returned.
