Ottawa Fire Department responds to burning power lines downtown

No injuries reported

Ottawa fire aerial trucks were inspected on Tuesday, Feb. 25, 2025 near the YMCA in Ottawa. Industrial Inspection and Analysis of Wilimgton, tested the departments ladders and aerials. The inspections are done once per year. Crews will be testing trucks throughout this week.

The Ottawa Fire Department responded Thursday to burning overhead power lines in the alley between Turk’s Furniture and Ace Hardware, according to a news release.

Firefighters arrived at 12:03 p.m. to find several power lines actively burning along the alley from Jefferson Street to Jackson Street, with the most visible activity near Turk’s Furniture’s exterior.

As a precaution, the fire response was upgraded. Crews entered Turk’s Furniture to ensure the building was clear and check for any potential fire spread inside.

The Ottawa Police Department assisted by keeping the area clear and evacuating nearby occupants temporarily. Crews quickly determined the fire was limited to the exterior power lines with no structural damage.

Ameren was notified and shut down power to the block about 12:29 p.m. to safely address the issue.

The alley and nearby parking areas between Jefferson and Jackson Streets will remain closed until utility work is completed. The public is asked to avoid the area during repairs.

Businesses in the immediate area will be temporarily affected by the outage.

There were no injuries reported.

The Ottawa Fire Department was assisted by the Ottawa Police Department, Ottawa Public Works and Ameren.
