The Hegeler Carus Mansion, located at 1307 Seventh Street in La Salle, is one of the Midwest's great Second Empire structures. Completed in 1876 for Edward C. Hegeler, a partner in the nearby Matthiessen Hegeler Zinc Company. The mansion was designed in 1874 by noted Chicago architect William W. Boyington. The mansion is now owned and operated by the Hegeler Carus Foundation, and is open to the public. The Julius W. Hegeler I House was built in 1902 for Julius who was the eldest son of Edward C. Hegeler.

The Hegeler Carus Mansion and the Starved Rock Lodge & Conference Center are offering residents two opportunities to participate in the “Journey Through Time - Hegeler Carus Mansion Tour,” on April 6 and April 20.

On the tour, participants begin with lunch in the main dining room at the Starved Rock Lodge at 11 a.m., continue to take a trolley ride to La Salle at 12 p.m. and embark on a private, one-hour tour of the home, according to a press release.

Along the tour, a guide will explain the stories behind the home’s architecture and history, the region, and the family and their legacy.

Registration for the event is $48.
