Several local wrestlers fared well at the Illinois Elementary School Association State Wrestling meet held over the weekend.
Leading the way was Bradley Central's Austin Spacht. Spacht edged out Kai Neumark, of Deerfield Caruso, 9-7 to win the championship in the 70-pound division. Spacht picked up a quick pin in the first round and an easy technical fall victory in the quarterfinals before winning by a narrow decision in the semifinal.
Locals also participating in the 70-pound class were Zach Finch, of Coal City, who worked his way back through the wrestlebacks to claim sixth place. Wilmington's Jack Narine won a preliminary match before bowing out with a loss in the first round.
Paul Keane, of Peotone, also put together a dominating performance in winning the 85-pound division. Keane won all four of his matches by comfortable margins, including a win by major decision in the title match.
The 90-pound classification was loaded with local representation, including the champion, Alex Friddle, of Coal City. Friddle defeated Gannon Kosowski, of Algonquin Heineman, by decision 6-0.
Peotone's Jake Liberatore also reached the semifinals before dropping a 5-0 decision to Kosowski at that stage. Liberatore won two matches prior to that stage before also winning the fifth-place match over Caleb Nix of Auburn by 4-2 decision.
Manteno's Josh Keane was eliminated in the preliminary round.
At 112 pounds, Coal City's Ryan Wasielewski swept through four straight matches to claim the state title.
Dwight's Cade Enerson also dropped a preliminary round decision in the 112-pound class.
At 95 pounds, Steven Karraker of Bradley Central picked up a first round victory before dropping into the wrestlebacks. He regrouped to win one match in the wrestlebacks but ended up in sixth place.
Thomas Konetski, of Clifton Nash, led local participants in the 105-pound division. Konetski picked up a first-round win before falling into the wrestlebacks with a loss in the quarterfinals. Konestki then won four straight matches to claim third place.
Daniel Gutierrez, of Dwight, won a preliminary round match before falling in the first round in the 95-pound class.
At 119, Landon Flynn, of Wilmington, won a pair of early matches, lost in the quarterfinals and then bowed out in the quarterfinals of the wrestlebacks.
Josh Loomis picked up a pair of early-round wins in the 135-pound class, fell in the quarterfinals and also dropped a decision in the wrestlebacks.
A pair of locals participated at 215. Cole Turner, of Herscher-Limestone, lost his preliminary round match and won a wrestleback match before bowing out. Hunter Howley, of Bradley Central, also won a preliminary match, then won a wrestleback match before falling in the quarterfinals of the wrestlebacks.
At 275, Xavier Slaughter, of Dwight, earned a preliminary round victory before fall in the first round.
In the 65-pound division, Coal City's Evan Rivera was eliminated in the preliminary round with a loss by major decision.
In the 75-pound division, Adell Gamboa, of Reed-Custer, was eliminated in the preliminary in an overtime loss by decision.
In the 80-pound classification, Brandon Strnad, of Coal City, was ousted in the preliminary round by a loss by pin.
In the 145-pound division, Manteno's Jacob Smith lost his preliminary round match and also dropped a wrestleback match.
At 185, Dwight's Cameron Klingler lost an opening round match.
