Kankakee police arrested 24-year-old Nazhai S. Hill, of Kankakee, for allegedly setting a fire that damaged a residence, garage, and three vehicles Tuesday.
The Kankakee Fire Department said they were dispatched about 11 a.m. for a structure fire in the 800 block of North Greenwood Avenue.
Upon arrival, firefighters found a 2 1/2-car detached garage on fire. The fire was quickly extinguished.
There were no injuries reported.
Heat from the fire damaged a nearby home. Three vehicles in the garage were damaged, fire officials said.
Damage to structures was estimated at $40,000, with loss of vehicles estimated at $30,000, fire officials said.
Residents on the scene said that the fire was the result of arson.
Hill was found by an arson investigator and taken in for questioning. Police assisted in the investigation, and Hill was held for another crime.
According to Kankakee County Sheriff’s Office online records, Hill was arrested for the charge of attempted murder, residential arson, home invasion and aggravated domestic battery.
